5 things to know about JKM which are guaranteed to make your life easier ... after all, would we lie to you?

1. Never believe the note, "This item not held locally," which appears in the EBSCO databases. Given the strengths of the JKM collection, there's a strong likelihood we do have the journal or book for which you're searching. And how do you know whether we have the book or subscribe to the journal? Always always always check the online catalog. If you're unsure, consult with Anthony or Barry. Or place an interlibrary loan request, and Barry will get back to you soon thereafter.

2. About 20% of the circulating collection is not — repeat, not — represented in the online catalog. If you're looking for an item with a publication date prior to 1979, check (in this order) the online catalog, and then — if you can't find it there — check the card catalog on the first floor. If you can't find it there, consult with Anthony or Barry.

3.  You can renew materials online (up to and including the date on which they are due) using the My Account features on the online catalog, by phone (773.256.0739) or by e-mail ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ). Stop by the circulation desk and ask for a demonstration by Elaine or one of her circulation assistants.

4. Before you visit the University of Chicago or any of the ACTS libraries and need either to apply for privileges or renew them, please make certain your ACTS borrower's card is up-to-date. Borrower cards expire on 31 December or 30 June of every year. If your borrower's card has expired, ask for a new one at the circulation desk.

5.  If you need help when you're starting your research, ask Anthony or Barry. If you need help when you're in the middle of your research, ask Anthony or Barry. If your paper is due tomorrow and you haven't started yet and have no idea where to begin, ask Anthony or Barry. Seriously. Ask. Please.
