Research helpful hint no. 2: Scripture citation searching in the ATLA Religion database
Login into the EBSCO databases by first left-clicking on the EBSCO link on the toolbar on the JKM homepage:
Input the EBSCO user i.d. and password and click on Login. If you do not have the user i.d. and password, or have forgotten or lost them, send an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or call the JKM circulation desk at 773.256.0739.
The database menu appears, with the ATLA Religion database as the default option. Click on Continue to search the ATLA RDB:
The Advanced Search screen will appear. Click on the Indexes search option (not Scriptures) at the top of the screen:
The Indexes search menu will appear. Using the pull-down menu, select the Scripture Citation option:
In the Browse For field, input the name of the book and the chapter for which you want to search. At least initially, you might not want to search beyond the chapter level. For example, if you want to search psalm 88:
If you wanted to search a numbered book of the Bible ( e.g.: 1st Samuel, 3rd Epistle of John), input the name of the book of the Bible, followed by a comma, followed by 1st, 2nd, or 3rd; e.g.: Chronicles, 1st; Corinthians, 2nd; John, 3rd:
Select that citation (or citations) that are relevant to your research by left-clicking on the box to the left of the citation:
Click on the Add button to paste the citations into the Search field, and then click on Search:
Those article and essay citations that have been assigned those scripture citations appear in reverse chronological order:
