Faculty Office

The faculty office at JKM is designed primarily for visiting scholars and adjunct faculty and for faculty needing a quiet, secure place to study and leave their belongings for an agreed upon time. Faculty on a sabbatic leave should request a closed carrel for the duration of their leave. (See the JKM website for more information about requesting a closed carrel.)

The faculty office shares space with the Syriac Institute materials. These microfilm are shelved along the periphery of the room and are under the supervision of The Oriental Institute and Ralph Klein. Staff from the Oriental Institute enter the room periodically to retrieve and return rolls of film as part of the OI’s digitization project. Please do not remove or rearrange these reels. And don’t be surprised if on rare occasion an OI scholar is in the room!

Available in the office for your use are: a large study table, two chairs for the table, a reading nook with (we hope) a comfortable chair, lamp and side table; and two bookcases with 12 shelves total. The bookcases are for the storage of your library materials and personal items, but must be shared with your colleagues. Please label your shelves with your name and (if a specific duration) dates of office use (e.g., “materials for an article due Jan. 15th”). Please do not leave personal or library possessions in the office past the conclusion of your project or need for the office. JKM assumes no responsibility for any items lost or stolen from the office.

This office may be used only when the JKM Library is open. You must leave the office at closing time.

Pick up the key to the faculty office at the circulation desk each time you visit the library. In exchange, you will be asked to leave your JKM library card at the circulation desk for security reasons. When you leave, please return the key to the circulation desk and your library card will be returned to you. Replacement cost for a lost key is $5.00.

In order to ensure free access to library materials by all researchers, no non-circulating library materials (e.g., current or bound periodicals, reference materials) may be stored in the office. All circulating library materials stored in the office on your labeled shelf(ves) must be checked out at the circulation desk to your name. JKM Library reserves the right to check the office periodically.

Because of the temperature and humidity monitoring equipment for the microfiche, please use the room with the door closed at all times.

Please inform JKM staff on how well this space and its policies are contributing to your research, any problems encountered and suggestions for improvement. We will amend these policies based on experience.
