Fines
Library borrowers are responsible for all materials charged
to their library account and for either returning or renewing them in good shape on or before
the due date.
JKM Library does not charge fines for overdue regular (i.e., non-reserve) circulating materials. However, if regular circulating materials are not returned or renewed within 15 days of the due date, the Horizon online-catalog system will automatically contact the borrower via e-mail (as a courtesy) that the overdue materials are considered lost. This e-mail will be the only notification to the borrower that the item is overdue. The online system will issue a billing notice for the lost materials (replacement costs begin at $75) and block the borrower's account. When a borrower's account is blocked, he/she cannot check out or renew any library materials until the materials are either returned or renewed. When the borrower returns or renews the materials, the billing notice costs are waived and his/her library account unblocked. For overdue reserve materials JKM charges $0.25/hour. For recalled materials not returned after 7 days, JKM charges $1.00/day; if the recalled material was overdue or needed for reserve, fines begin accruing 24 hours after notification at $1.00/day. JKM Library accepts cash, money orders, and certified checks as payment for fines and fees. For fines and/or fees $75 and under, individuals currently affiliated with LSTC or McCormick may pay by personal check. Please make all checks payable to the JKM Library. Lost or damaged materials
JKM Library also considers materials lost if a) the borrower
cannot locate the item charged to his/her account; or, b) if in the assessment of
JKM staff, the extent of damage to an item precludes repair. Materials which have
mildewed, even after being slightly damp, cannot be repaired as mildew from one
item can infect other items.
Replacement costs of lost or damaged
materials begin at $75 and increase according to the cost of replacing the material. While this may seem like an extraordinarily high
amount, the $75 covers actual
replacement costs. Labor ($35 on average), barcodes, detection devices, labels,
and shipping must be added to the retail cost to ascertain the real cost of
replacing material. $75 is an estimated minimum of real costs. For example, if the retail cost of an item is $100, then the replacement cost is $135. JKM Library does not accept replacement copies of lost or damaged materials.
Theft or mutilation of library materials is prohibited; violators will be reported to the appropriate dean for disciplinary action. |
