Submission of Ph.D DissertationsGuidelines for Submitting Your Dissertation to JKMAs part of its collection development policy and to advance scholarship, JKM Library collects one copy of the dissertation written by each advanced degree candidate of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Your dissertation will be bound, and placed in the non-circulating dissertation collection.
FormattingThe dissertation should conform to the scholarly conventions set forth in Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations: Chicago Style for Students and Researchers, 7th ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2007), and, where applicable, The SBL Handbook of Style for Ancient Near Eastern, Biblical, and Early Christian Studies (Peabody, Mass.: Hendrickson Publishers, Inc., 1999). As the copy of the dissertation that is submitted to the library will be bound, please ensure that the left hand margin is 1 and 1/2 inches.
The JKM Library’s copy of the dissertation should incorporate all editorial and formatting suggestions made by the dissertation editor.

ProQuest requirementsProQuest/UMI Dissertation Publishing provides the only comprehensive service in the world for publishing, archiving and disseminating graduate research. With the goal of making your dissertation available to other libraries and scholars worldwide, JKM Library sends a copy of your dissertation to ProQuest/UMI for binding, publishing and entry into the ProQuest digital dissertations database. The ProQuest/UMI Publishing Guide contains instructions on how to submit your manuscript and information about the dissemination options available to you, copyright issues, your rights as an author and ProQuest/UMI's rights and obligations as your publisher, and a Publishing Agreement , which you must sign and include with a copy of your dissertation. Please read this information thoroughly so that your choices accurately reflect how you want ProQuest/UMI to manage your printed work. Print out and complete the Publishing Agreement, select those options and services that best fit your needs, and sign the Agreement. Please note that the $137.50 fee (see below) includes copyright registration for your dissertation. Ordering personal copies of your dissertation
In addition to the one copy sent to ProQuest/UMI for inclusion into the JKM collection, you may also order additional copies for yourself and others who are interested in reading your dissertation. See p. 6 of the Publishing Agreement to order personal copies at a reduced cost. ProQuest/UMI accepts only credit/debit cards and postal money orders for purchasing personal copies. The cost of personal copies is above and beyond that of the $137.50 submission fee.
Submitting your dissertation to the JKM LibraryOne original copy of your dissertation must be submitted to Sandra Magee, JKM Library Administrative Assistant, on or (preferably) before 4:30 p.m. on April 30th if you wish to receive your degree at the May commencement. If April 30th falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the dissertation must be submitted to the JKM Library no later than 4:30 p.m. the previous Friday.
Upon your submission of the dissertation to JKM Library Sandra Magee will sign and date the form notifying the Advanced Studies Office that the dissertation has been received by the JKM Library. Bring the signed form to the Advanced Studies Office for signature and dating by the Director of Advanced Studies, who in turn will confirm with the Registrar your eligibility for May graduation. It is your responsibility to see that your submitted dissertation is complete and in correct order. Neither JKM nor your advisor nor ProQuest/UMI will check for completeness. An incomplete dissertation can delay ProQuest/UMI processing by more than six months.
